Elon Musk criticizes Twitter’s use of engineering resources
Tesla CEO Elon Musk slammed Twitter on Friday over its new non-fungible token (NFT) profile picture service. “It’s boring,” Musk wrote. “Twitter spends engineering resources on this bs while crypto scammers throw a spambot block party in every thread!?”
Twitter launched the NFT profile picture service on Thursday to allow users to set an NFT as their profile picture. NFT profile images are displayed with a special hexagonal shape. “At this time, Twitter only supports static NFT images (JPEG, PNG) minted on the Ethereum blockchain,” the company clarified.
Musk’s tweet received many comments. Some agreed with the Tesla CEO that Twitter should make better use of its resources, stressing the need to crack down on crypto scammers and spambots on the platform.
Adam Singer, a former chief marketing officer at Google, agreed with Musk, tweeting:
Elon is right on this point. Twitter’s product team needs better prioritization of what’s really important to user experience.
He added, “By the way, every Elon Tweet comment section is an easy honeypot that they could use to neutralize a sizable number of spammers/scammers (yet they don’t do anything).”
However, some have hit back at Musk for using Tesla’s engineering resources on cryptocurrency, including accepting the cryptocurrency dogecoin (DOGE) meme.
“Some people feel the same way about cryptocurrency,” one told Musk. Another wrote: “Tesla is also wasting resources in crypto BS.” A third commented: “Isn’t Tesla promoting Doge boring?” A fourth pointed out:
Elon [is] getting absolutely fucked for criticizing Twitter spending resources on NFT integration while doing the exact same thing with his company and DOGE.
Musk’s electric car company accepted bitcoin early last year, but stopped due to environmental concerns. The company began accepting dogecoin payments on January 14 for certain merchandise.
